Evaluation of Lip Sync Activity

After producing a successful lip sync video i have learnt various editing, and shooting skills which will come in useful when we proceed to create our music video. The lip sync exercise has allowed me to improve both editing skills and acting in front of a camera. The exercise allowed me and my group to film our very own sequence consisting of long shots, mid shots and close ups.During the filming process, we had to film a long shot through a window 3 floors up from the media department down to street level. This made some of the footage less clear the others and ultimately effected how professional the video looked. When we are filming our music video we will have to think of other alternatives so that the footage is as good as possible.

Using Final Cut Express to edit our footage proved a challenge not just to me but to my group members too as software was new to all three of us. With the help of a user guide we were able to begin editing a footage to choose the best clips to use within out video. After we had successfully chosen our clips and synchronised them into with our song. We began to add some effects to make the video flow frequently and look more professional. Some of the effects used include fade in/out and cross dissolve.

I hope to have learned the skills necessary to create a professional music video.

Treatment

For our Music video, we have chosen the band Weak(end) Arrows. They are a three piece indie band who are becoming more popular as their songs appear on radio and are marketed across the internet. We have all contributed ideas toward the production of their music video. The chosen song by the band is called 'Rabbits'. This is Weak(end) Arrows first single. We decided to do this because the other two members of my media group are part of the band( Sam turner - Lead Guitar, Connor Simmons - Bass)

  • We plan to have two intercutting sequences, similar to many music videos reales in todays market.
  • The first shot will be the band performing the song.
  • The other shot will be the narrative about the song itself.
  • The Shots of Weak(end) arrows themselves will be in a blackout room, with lots of different lighting effects and camera angles.
  • The narrative linking to the song will be the three band members dressed as rabbits telling the story much like Ghost Of  You by My Chemical Romance.
The location that we are filming the band perform is the drama studio on the school premises. This location is perfect as it is a blackout room and perfect for a band or performance to take place. There are various different lights and we can film many different camera shots. The narrative will be filmed at a different location which has not yet been confirmed.

Chosen Song for Lip Sync

After having a group meeting we have come to the conlcusion of a the song we will lip sync for the task. We have chosen Mr Brightside by the killers. The killers are a Las Vegas rock band and their songs appears on the groups debut album "Hot Fuss"We have chosen this song because we all know the lyrics relatively well and have all heard the song played a number of times. This will help us to create a good lip sync task. The song was named "song of the decade" by UK radio stations Absolute radio and XFM. It was also voted 9th for the greatest guitar riffs in the " 21st centruy by Total guitar Magazine.

Blink 182 has always been considered the fun-loving, silly, pop rock boys in the mainstream charts, but with the release of their self-titled album, a new side of Blink 182 was revealed. The song I Miss You expresses most of this dark feeling that are consistent for the entire album. Even the music videos from this album were no longer bright and full of slapstick comedy, but raw, intense, and dismal. The video is very dark and gloomy which is a code for the sign of evil and unhappiness. We can see a white car which keeps appearing and walking across the camera, this is code for purity and heaven. This may be trying to say they are in a gloomy and tough patch but will pull through back to goodness. A lot of effects such as smoke and lighting are used to emphasis the gloomy and dark state of the video. The whole video is very old fashioned and filmed in some sort of castle or manor that we see in the beginning. Finally throughout the video we see the band walking through a dark forest which once again shows the the theme and connotes evil and danger.

Analysis of

Under Cover Of Darkness by The Stokes is made to look like an orchestral video rather than the punk band they actually are. The video is filmed in 2 places, a theatre and a posh mansion. At the beginning we see the band playing up at the balcony's of a theatre, we see each band member playing their instrument which is a conventions of a typical music video. As the video progresses we see the band in a old style mansion which conveys, well mannered and rich people rather than a indie band. We can then see the band playing on the stage of a theatre whilst being conducted, this is juxtaposition as punk band playing in a theatre is extremely out of place. The video its self looks very old fashioned because the parts of the video are in black and white which is a colour connoting the past which also links to the theatre which is a performance of the past in todays world.

Analysis of Album Art

Th is eminem album 'The hits and unleashed'

The main picture is in black and white and is a conventions of eminem album artwork as he has previously and frequently makes his album art work play and white. The colour black and white is code for old fashioned, evil and darkness. Eminem appears on the album cover as the main picture which a standard conventions of album artwork and especially eminem as he frequently appears on his own albums.
The font he has used is a also a standard conventions and is unique to him. It is very bold, sharp and futuristic. He always writes his name with the letter 'E' facing the opposite way. This is unique to him and an convention of album artwork. The same font is used on all of eminem album and is the same with most album artwork today.

Analysis Of Album Artwork

Pendulum's album immersion is set under the sea with two naked humans together under a beam of light shining through from the surface. Thiss signifies they are imerging together as one hence the name of the album. The album titles stands out well on the background of the dark sea. Around the beam of light the background is very dark representing a very dark and unheard genre of musis. The music is drum and bass and is not promoted as much as other genres within the music indusrty in todays society. The two humans are naked indicating a very pure and natural album cover set in a very unpolluted environment in the ocean. We can see what we believe to be coral and sea inhabitants once again representing a very natural piece of album art work. The Album cover displays both the Artists Name and the name of the album, these are all conventions of album art. The font style is very metallic, technologic and futuristic and instantly tells us this music it produced electronically. The font looks like steel and its centered in capitals, it look very robust, hard and displays a clear context of masculinity. While in some genres of music it is conventional to see a picture of the artist, in dance music it is not, therefore this is conventional in that sense. The conventions of album art are designed to draw your attention. In this case the idea of two naked humans shows sexuality, this shows that the humans are immersing together.

Analysis Of Album Artwork

This is Eminem's latest album cover for Relapse, when looking at this album cover we are instantly drawn to Eminem face which is made up of what appears to be lots of different coloured pills. This stands out well on the black background. Many of the pills are red which is a connoting colour towards the theme of danger, it also connotes blood and anger. The picture looks like a piece of popart and has be created to make his image look dangeruos and angry. The name of the album is Relapse, which signifies he is coming back into the music after having a break, this signifies that music is his drug. The album has a parental advisory logo in the bottom left corner, this is typical of of Eminem as lots of his songs are very graphic and use a lot of rough language.
This album cover really connotes the theme of danger, and Eminem's eyes are really evil which stare straight at you. The font used is a convention for all Eminem albums. He makes it orignal by using an irregular letter "E" which is always the wrong way round on every album cover where he spells his name. This is unique to his album art work. The conventions for album artwork is to display a picture of the artist and this album follows these conventions. The picture itself is made out of pills which is code for drug use, the dark world of illegal substances and living on edge. The artwork draws your attention which is a conventions of all album artwork. It displays both the name of the artist and the name of the album on the label on the left hand side. This is a conventions of album artwork.

Lip Syncing Task

We have been asked to create a short music video to work on our ability of lip synchronisation. We wanted to do "Zzzonked" by Enter Shikari because it would be very fun and enjoyable but very complex as for most of the song it is sounds like just a shout. On top of this we have discovered we should not choose a song exceeding 3 minutes. This task will help us improve are editing skills for the main task so we can create a  realistic and enjoyable music video. We will mime sing to a song, using different camera shots throughout the video and edit them altogether to make a finished lip sync task. Suggestions and ideas for a song will be posted at a later date..

Marketing A Band

Bands within the UK use many different methods to promote their music, not just across the country but on a global scale. A popular method is Viral Marketing, which is uploading music to internet sites such as YouTube and Vevo. YouTube and Vevo are sites on the world wide web which you can upload videos, not just music videos but it is a great place to attract fans and followers of your music. People all over the world can access the site and watch or listen to their favourite bands for free. Many bands started off by uploading their songs to their social networking sites such as MySpace. As they created a larger fan base, they began recording more songs, which then go on sale in stores such a HMV and online music stores such as iTunes. These bands then do warm up gigs for acts with a wider fan base, this increases the capacity of people following them and their genre of music. These Bands or artists then do concert and gigs of their own in arenas such as 02 in London. They charge people to get in, and sell merchandise promoting their band even more. Viral marketing is how many bands started their career. One prime example is Arctic Monkeys who started off by using viral marketing and uploading their recordings to YouTube.

Inspiration

This video by Enter Shikari holds some similar material that we hope to use within our music video for Weak(end) Arrows.

Choosing A Track For My Music Video

After consulting the members of my group we have come to conclusion to make a music video for their band Weak(end) arrows. Their band is a three piece Indie band consisting of guitar, bass and drums. They have two recordings of their own songs(Rabbits & Hope is Romantic) which are available to listen to on their facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Weakend-Arrows/155621173494  As well as their current recordings they hope to record more in the upcoming future. They have played at gigs such as The Horn in Romford and has a big upcoming gig in Birmingham 02 Academy. Creating a music video for one of their songs would be of great interest to their future as a band.
